Old Made Crafted
I’ve been sewing since I was 4 and it’s always been my happy place. I’m calmest when my hands are busy.
These objects are my therapy and my joy. Making them is a mindful process giving me respite from the stresses and noise of modern life, and making use of fabrics that might otherwise be lost or thrown away.
As much as 92 million tons of clothing ends up in landfills. Only 20% of textiles are collected for reuse or recycling globally. Almost 60% of all clothing material is actually plastic taking decades to break down and compromising the environment. *
It can be easy to think there is nothing you can do. But if no one starts, nothing changes. My small effort to reverse this global catastrophe is to make quilts and cushions one piece of recycled textile at a time.
These fabrics have been washed and worn and used and loved before. Now you can do the same knowing that a little less fabric entered landfill.
Fabric in the Old Made textiles are either discarded, gifted, or sourced from other objects like shirts, tableware, bedding, and curtains. Most are bought from op shops, transfer stations, or Trademe giving old items a new life in new places.
